Qualitative filter paper is mainly used to determine the presence or absence of substances. It is suitable for routine filtration and general laboratory work, where low ash content is not critical.
Quantitative filter paper, however, is designed for precise analytical work. During manufacturing, the pulp is treated and thoroughly washed to remove inorganic impurities, resulting in extremely low ash content after combustion. This ensures that the filter paper itself does not affect analytical results.
Laboratories should select filter paper based on the purpose of the experiment rather than cost alone. Using the wrong type may lead to inaccurate data, repeated testing, and unnecessary delays.
